Yo-Yo Weight Loss: 2 Simple Tips to End It

Dr. Kavita | October 24, 2010

Almost all of us have had our own share of nightmares. But watching the weight go up again, after managing to lose quite a decent amount of flab; tops the list of a weight watcher’s worst night mares. The trouble is when the weight keeps on bouncing up and down and up again, which we all are quite familiar with. Better known by its notorious moniker, yo-yo weight loss pattern is not only exasperating to deal with, but also quite injurious to health.

This post aims at presenting 2 useful tips to prevent falling in to this dangerous cycle of yo-yo weight loss pattern.

#1 Avoid eating while being stressed out

Stress is an inevitable part of our lives, and the earlier we learn to manage it positively and live with it, so much the better. Using stress as an excuse to binge or indulge in comfort eating is one of the top reasons for a constantly turbulent weight and resultant yo-yo weight loss pattern.

The worst part about eating while stressed out is that, we manage to dump huge amounts of food, without even noticing what we are eating. This also means that the eating is so rapid, that the Brain does not find adequate time to register the amount, and send a satiety signal which would otherwise save you from eating such inordinate amounts of food.

So what can you do to avoid this dangerous eating-to- harm type of pattern? Consciously avoid such automatic eating while being stressed out. Find some other safe way to let out the steam, like for instance pacing up and down, or going out for a walk or distracting your self for a few moments by doing some thing that you truly enjoy.

#2 Avoid counting the calories and being obsessive about weight loss

It sure might sound a bit odd and difficult to digest, but the next tip to avoid the yo-yo weight loss pattern would be to stop flogging your self so mercilessly. Well, I am not suggesting you to stop dieting or stop following a fitness routine. I am merely suggesting that you stop being obsessive about the weight loss results, because stress is a huge factor in over eating and weight gain. Now the body would not differentiate between the stress that your mind undergoes over the upcoming board meeting, or stress due to lack of expected weight loss results. I am sure you get my point now, so the best mantra is to stop worrying about the results of weight loss, while continuing with a consistent fitness schedule.
