  GI is an acronym for Glycemic index. Glycemic index is a value used to measure how rapidly and to what extent a certain food is capable of elevating your blood glucose level after digestion. This is actually a comparative value, where foods are compared with equivalent amount of pure glucose.

  To be on the safer side, consider 60 as the margin or limit. All foods below 60 may be considered safe for consumption, whereas the opposite holds true for GI over 60. But if you are a diabetic or have an issue of repeated hypoglycemic attacks then better use 40 as the safe limit.

  It is really difficult to base your selection of foods solely upon the criterion of GI alone. So the best bet is to use moderation and common sense. Select healthy foods that are high in GI in moderation, and skip all unhealthy foods irrespective of their GI index. Another way to categorize is to choose all major components of your diet that have GI within 70 and half of the components must have GI below 50.
