Ital refers to the dietary beliefs of Rastafarians. The word itself comes from the English word "Vital".
The belief of Rastafarians is that that every living being on the planet contains "Livity", or life energy and the primary goal in following an Ital diet is to increase Livity.
Many of those who follow the Ital diet are vegetarian or even vegan as the belief is that meat is dead and so will lead to a decrease in Livity. The general principle amongst Rastas is that all food should be pure or natural and from the earth. Strict followers will only use clay and wood cooking utensils and aviod the use of canned and dried produce.
