Cardiovascular disease has been the single greatest cause of mortality in the twentieth century. Patients with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and the majority of people with type 2 diabetes die of cardiovascular complications. Type 2 diabetes is also associated with other complications:• Retinopathy. The risk of developing eye disease either by cataracts or hemorrhaging of blood vessels in the back of the eye is increased in type 2 diabetes.• Neuropathy. Nerve damage can cause decreased blood flow and pain in the hands and feet which may even result in amputation.• Nephropathy. Damage to the nephrons of the kidney result in protein urea that could lead to progressive renal failure.• Foot ulcers. Neuropathy and ischemia are the chief factors that cause foot ulcers in type 2 diabetes, with the latter being the more serious of the two. Diabetes is the greatest non-traumatic cause of amputation.2011-06-20 05:39:19
